The former Caserne de l’Esperance, fully renovated, has housed the National Dance Centre of Burgundy and Franche-Comté in Belfort since September 1995.
Rehabilitated by architect Bernard Reichen, in close collaboration with Odile Duboc and Françoise Michel, who were then co-directors of the National Dance Centre, the space is equipped with facilities tailored to all the disciplines involved in choreographic creation (scenography, lighting, sound, costumes, etc.). It provides artists with ideal conditions for producing a complete performance. The creation hall, resembling a theater stage, with exceptional dimensions and state-of-the-art stage equipment, serves as an exemplary tool for choreographic and scenographic research, making it a space dedicated to dance, unique in France.
In 1984, the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with local authorities, established the National Dance Centres (CCN) to organize and support dance creation in France while increasing its global presence.
The CCN designation provides choreographer-directors with dedicated workspaces and essential resources for their artistic growth. It also encourages these spaces to be accessible to the public, thereby broadening the audience for dance. Additionally, CCNs offer their stage and production facilities to resident companies, fostering the creation and distribution of performances, and contributing to a dynamic dance landscape both nationally and internationally. Today, the National Dance Centers are a network of 19 institutions spread across France.
VIADANSE, the National Dance Centre of Burgundy and Franche-Comté, is a creative hub in Belfort where contemporary dance thrives in an atmosphere of openness and collaboration.
It’s a place where projects flow and connections are made, driven by attentive listening and a strong commitment to democratic values. Since 2015, under the leadership of Hela Fattoumi and Eric Lamoureux, VIADANSE has been dedicated to broadening access to dance, fostering connections between people and artistic works, and encouraging engagement with the wider world. Deeply rooted in its local community, VIADANSE operates on both local and international levels, prioritizing long-term partnerships, especially with key collaborators in neighboring Switzerland. With a focus on intercultural exchange and openness, VIADANSE emphasizes values of humanity, solidarity, and flexibility, essential for meeting today’s challenges.
While the creations of Héla Fattoumi and Éric Lamoureux are central to its artistic vision, VIADANSE also offers professional dance training, community outreach, and arts education, encouraging diverse forms of engagement.
Through active participation in various networks and initiatives like Tour de Danse(s), VIADANSE promotes the circulation of artists and works, ensuring that dance continues to inspire and connect us all.
